Illuminate dc review8/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Wrap it up: what are we coming here for? This speakeasy has date night written all over it. Great show Illuminate In the dark, actors lit with micro lights, dance, story, special effects. How did you find the staff?Friendly, not obtrusive, and clearly fond of their craft. There are also classic bar bites like cheese and charcuterie boards, plus a hearty potato dish with smoked labneh and Nduja sausage. What's on the food menu? The cocktails might be serious, but the snacks are anything but, from popcorn meant to taste like Hidden Valley Ranch to an upscale take on Pringles (involving caviar, naturally). The folks behind the bar are always happy to riff, too, whipping up a frothy cocktail with pumpkin butter when we asked for something autumnal. Specialty cocktails overseen by Eaton's Alexandra Bookless Turner incorporate ingredients like ube, clarified kefir, and turmeric-infused blanc vermouth. Or try the combo section, with options like Van Winkle Special Reserve served with DC Brau. ![]() How are the drinks? The hefty drinks list is divided into flavor profiles (boozy, sour, sweet, or bubbly) with takes on French 75, Rob Roy, and all the classics. You'll see regulars and hotel guests chatting with bartenders. So who’s there? This is a bar where you can hear yourself talk. Black pendant lights barely illuminate the room, but you can still see the incredibly detailed murals of mythical creatures by artist Erik Thor-Sandberg, all inspired by "Alice in Wonderland" and the story of civil rights activist Ruby Bridges. Once you've made it into the intimate, moody space, grab a stool at the wooden semi-circular bar or take a seat at one of the sexy leather couches. First impression? You have to know what you're looking for to find Allegory, which is tucked behind a nondescript black door in the lobby library of Eaton D.C., downtown's hippest new hotel. Illuminate Education has an overall rating of 3.2 out of 5, based on over 220 reviews left anonymously by employees. ![]()
